Is it normal for a gynaecologist to put their finger inside & out of me repeatedly

I had a vaginal exam today, I felt comfortable for the most part until my female gynaecologist started to literally finger me in and out repeatedly for about four motions until I told her to stop. It took my brain a minute to comprehend what was going on as there was no explanation before hand. I felt sick to my stomach and a knowing something wasn’t right, she maintained eye contact the whole time with little expression. It was strange. I have had many examinations in the last few months due to unexplained pain down below. So I am used to these examinations but this one in particular has left me feeling affected in a weird way.
